I couldn't agree with you more. Reducing the dependence on the VLE or in the US and Canada we refer to this as the Course Management System (CMS) is something that I would like to see as well. We deployed class blogs at ACU last fall and are surprised at the large number of faculty who adopted this technology very rapidly. It will be interesting to see how many switched from the CMS to the blog. I also agree that we have an excessive usage of exams and lectures. I hope we leverage this latest round of technology to really impact the learning and not let companies like Blackboard swoop in and dictate the way online learning is handled.
Two educational cultures separated by different TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms)! I prefer CMS = Content Management System as in (heaven help us) MS Sharepoint. I mention this because our university has developed a new Virtual Learning Environment using Sharepoint. Never mind, there are ways to go here and I get the impression Circl members prefer the tutor/instructor/lecturer yo student directions rather than Institutional directed. So I fully agree to reduce the 'Blackboard tendency' - how well is Moodle used in the US?
Moodle is definitely gaining ground in the US but not at the same rate as it is in Canada. For example nearly half of the 22 HE institutions in the Province of Alberta have moved partially or completely to Moodle. I see this as a lateral move because while Moodle is not Blackboard is still is a CMS and forces the user to shape the pedagogy to fit its model.
Agreed. Moodle does seem to have a more educator-friendly base but still top down. Is there any movement towards Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) in the US? Maybe I should explain a bit more out a project related to PLEs for which we have some funding.
